So long as you have a plumbing system in your home, you need a water heater expansion tank to save you a lot of excess pressure troubles from your hot water supply. When you heat water, it expands. Concurrently, the pressure in the pipes rises if the room is not big enough.

The increased pressure can shorten the heater’s service life, and wear out the components sooner than expected. So, to deal with this, you install an expansion tank as a safety device to the water supply pipe.

An expansion tank is mostly over the water heater via a tee-fitting built-in cold-water delivery pipe.

Know the right size of your tank to reduce pressure fluctuations in your plumbing system. Grab the right tee-fitting, and tape also.

Step 1: Connect a Dielectric Union.

Set the water heater the right way and join the dielectric union to the cold water’s entry port. Use pipe-sealing tape to seal the union threads and snatch a pipe wrench to do the threading through the water heater’s cold-water inlet task.


Step 2: Join Adapter, copper pipe, and tee fitting.

Use a pipe wrench (or channel-lock pliers) to screw in the threaded copper adapter on the dielectric union (the other end). Then, join the short-length copper pipe and the tee-fitting on the adapter (give good enough clearance for the expansion tank).


Step 3: Attach the Expansion Tank Pipe.


The same tools will work to join the horizontal copper pipe and the tee-fitting side outlet. The space available would then affect the length of the copper pipe. However, it is best to maintain it as short as possible. Attach a female threaded adapter at the horizontal pipe’s end.


Step 4: Secure the Expansion Tank.

Using pipe-sealing tape, wrap the threaded fitting on the water heater expansion tank and screw it on the threaded adapter. Use hands to tighten threaded fittings, but be smooth to prevent causing damage to the fittings or pipes. Lock the expansion tank in its mounting bracket. If necessary, before the expansion tank, install an extra valve to isolate the tank from the unit. This will facilitate an easy alternative when it comes to it.


Step 5: Finish the Installation.

To finish the installation process, use the correct pipe to link the top outlet with the tee-fitting to the cold-water supply pipe – the perfect fit for this attachment is a copper flex pipe.


Step 6: Open the water supply line and Inspect for any leakage.


If any, turn off the water valves and re-twist the fittings.

To confirm the installation process, check the pressure inside the expansion tank using a manometer. The readings should match the unit’s specifications.


Step 7: Restore the power and water supply to the water heater.

Once satisfied, switch on the circuit breaker and gas supply valve.
