How to Install a Water Softener in Florida

A water softener is very important in the home because it helps remove minerals like calcium and magnesium from hard water. Though there are many steps to water softener installation, the process is simple and easy. Read our guide below for a simple water softener installation.

Tools and Materials Needed to Install a Water Softener

  • Water softener unit
  • Bypass valves
  • Wrench
  • Pipe cutter
  • Teflon tape
  • Compression fittings
  • Drain line
  • Electrical outlet

Instructions

1. Find a Spot for the Installation

First things first, find a good spot for your water softener unit. We recommend choosing a spot near the main water supply line and a drain. This spot should have enough space for the unit and anyone who comes in to service it. It should also be adequately ventilated to prevent excess levels of moisture.

2. Shut Off the Water Supply

Find the main water supply valve in the home and shut it off for the duration of the project.

3. Drain the Plumbing System

Go through your entire home and open all faucets to drain the remaining water from the plumbing system. Doing so is essential as it will prevent leaks during the installation process.

4. Cut the Main Water Line

Take your pipe cutter and make a straight incision into the main water supply line.

5. Install Bypass Valves

Grab your bypass valves and install them at the water supply line you just cut, attaching a valve at each end.

6. Connect the Water Softener Unit

Using the compression fittings and Teflon tape, connect the water softener unit to the inlet side of the unit. You must reference the manufacturer’s guidelines for appropriately connecting the pipes and fittings.

7. Connect the Drain Line

With the unit in place, you must connect the drain line to the unit and extend it into a nearby drain. Secure the drain line so it doesn’t bend or create blockages that would slow the water flow.

8. Plug in the Water Softener

With the unit connected, you can now plug it into the electrical outlet. Ensure you follow any instructions from the manufacturer regarding the unit’s electrical connections.

9. Regulate the Water Flow

Using the bypass valves you installed in step #5, direct the water to flow through the unit or around it, depending on your preferences.

10. Turn On the Water Supply

Gradually turn on the water supply, carefully checking the unit for leaks at all its connections and fittings. You may need to tighten the components that show water leakage.

11. Set Up and Program the Water Softener

Locate the instructions on programming the water softener and follow them. This will involve indicating the hardness level of your water and adjusting the features the unit offers.

12. Flush the System

Allow a bit of water to flow through the unit to flush out any particles that may have entered it during the installation process.
